Yahoo! Small Business?

I purchased web hosting from Yahoo!%26#039;s small business section. I e-mailed them a question, and 1 day and a half, no reply. This is unacceptable. The average response time is 24hours, which is still, unacceptable. Is there a backlog of e-mails or something? Please, let me know.
Yahoo! Small Business?
Hi Ben,

I understand your frustration, and you%26#039;re right that a day and a half is a long time to wait for an email response. We typically are able to respond to questions much more quickly, but unfortunately, we experienced a glitch in one of our email servers this week that caused emails like yours to back up. We have fixed the problem and are working overtime to reply to all of the backed-up emails as soon as possible.

If you need an answer more quickly, you might want to just give us a call. To do that, visit our contact page: http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/contactus... Here we%26#039;ll ask you to pick the topic that matches your issue, then provide the toll-free number at which we can best help you (to speed up response time, this number is reserved for account holders only, so I won%26#039;t print it here). We should be able to resolve your issue quickly.

Thank you for your patience.

Who Are The Top Webhosting Companies that Allow .HTACCESS Files to be Uploaded to Virtual Server Directories?

I need to upload .HTACCESS file to a designated folder but Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting does not allow this. Please tell me of a few %26quot;Top Tier%26quot; web hosting companies that allow this. Please no %26quot;fly by night%26quot; or %26quot;offshore%26quot; web hosts that will be out of business tomorrow, thanks.

How do i build a smart web site structure on Yahoo! small business?

I have a site that will leverage both http and https, and is hosted on Yahoo! small business services. I want to avoid the message %26quot;this page contains sercure and nonsecure ...%26quot; when a user visits the secure section of the site.

At first glance, I figured that I could place all of the required content into a folder under %26lt;root%26gt;/ssl and everything would be just fine. However, that poses some serious content management issues.

So, if I want to only maintain content in one place, can I place all of it under %26lt;root%26gt;/ssl and be just fine? If so, how do I modify the include_path to point to something like %26lt;riit%26gt;/ssl/include vs. the standard %26lt;root%26gt;/include?

Am I missing something?
How do i build a smart web site structure on Yahoo! small business?
all your links to images, etc. need to be secure. If you have anything that is from an http request it will throw that message. Everythign must be https://

The help http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com... of smallbusinesses is not working nad i want t ask

sorry if my question is not directly relevant but i was searching a way to ask about your small business web hosting plan at http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/contactus... and is not working. Anyway i wanted to ask you if i am allowed to have more that one domain name under the same web hosting plan and i also wanted to ask if there is an ssh access to my account. Thank you, George.
The help http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com... of smallbusinesses is not working nad i want t ask
yes, you may have many subdomains under the one main domain. log into your account and click on home. you will be able to locate domain heading and that is it
The help http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com... of smallbusinesses is not working nad i want t ask
Each account is under one domain name, for multiple domains you will have to set up a link from and to each.

Hope this helps

PHP Form Script Needed to Install on Yahoo Webhosting Standard Account?

I have a website hosted on Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting and I need a good PHP Form Script that I can use with Dreamweaver CS3 on Apple Mac OS X. Can anyone recommend a free script I can install on Yahoo Web Hosting that has PHP/MySQL integration? Also, does the Dreamweaver CS3 Developer Toolkit extensions include anything like this, I already have this but have no idea how to use it? Please advise, thanks.
PHP Form Script Needed to Install on Yahoo Webhosting Standard Account?
I haven%26#039;t had luck myself with finding a good PHP script, but you can still create the form in Dreamweaver CS3, using the Spry tools if you prefer, and link them to a perl script. The most popular one is the formail.pl script, which is well commented and easy enough to customize to your needs. This site has a good tutorial on using it: http://www.creativepro.com/story/howto/2...

Looking for tool to maintain php created website?

I took on a website created in php and now hosted at yahoo. I can (and have) edit the php files to change text, but I want to redesign the tabs and other aspects of the site. Should I do sitebuilder? or someone suggested Joomlah cm? It is a pretty simple site with text info, and form (applications, enquiries) submission (no animation, no registration). For background I am not a web developer, but feel I can handle a wysiwg tool and get addl help when I need it. I have a laptop running XP. I%26#039;d prefer to stay hosted by yahoo so would like something compatible, but I am not opposed to moving hosting if need be. I did look through all the questions in small business web hosting category already, but didn%26#039;t see this specific question so I thought I%26#039;d ask in the broader audience. Any help would be appreciated!
Looking for tool to maintain php created website?
When it comes to a CMS, Drupal and Joomla are pretty neck-and-neck these days in terms of popularity. Though my vote would be for Drupal, not just for features but also elegance of design from a software engineering perspective. They just added a lot of really good new features in version 6.0 recently.

For actually working with PHP code, and having a visual tool as well, I recommend a combination of NVU and ActiveState Komodo Edit. Both are free.

How do I get my Small Business email to be attached to my free email?

I have had Yahoo email since I have been on the web. When I created my Yahoo Web Hosting account and created the email identity for it, I could check my email all together. There was a box in the left-hand margin which showed all of my available mail accounts. Being a business person, I have several. Now I am only able to access one account at a time. Is there a way to put the %26quot;available mail accounts%26quot; box back on my own?

Looking for a good web hosting company and an excellent webpage builder?

im looking to opening a small business from home and want to show and how peolple purchase items from the website. i dont want to spend 3000 plus dollars on a website. im pretty good with the computer but dont know html, does anyone know of any good website builders online that offer hosting as well?
Looking for a good web hosting company and an excellent webpage builder?
Try OSCommerce, which allows you to make a complete store with no real coding experience necessary, and which does a great job of handling inventory, fulfillment and more:

http://www.oscommerce.com

Any decent LAMP host will do. I prefer Dreamhost:

http://www.dreamhost.com
Looking for a good web hosting company and an excellent webpage builder?
godaddy.com is a good registering site.

Don%26#039;t know about design though, I%26#039;m sure you could hire someone.
Reply:iPowerWeb (www.ipowerweb.com) has a pretty good solution for you. Check them out.
Reply:I would suggest SiteGround.com, because after searching for the best value per dollar, I settled on this site. They also offer support for OSCommerce, which is a Free Content Management System designed for online businesses. I%26#039;m not sure how easy it is to customize, but I believe it is supposed to be one of the easiest to use.

Here are some quick stats on Siteground.com:

FREE Domain

- 500 GB Web space

- 5000 GB Traffic per month

- 99.9% Server Uptime

- $5.95 per month
Reply:i don%26#039;t want to sound like i am trying to sell something, but here are some checklist you should think about before you buy webhosting,

#1. How much space do you need for your website (sure there are companies offering 5 GB - 300 GB for a decent price, but how much do you need)

#2.What features you need.

Then you can pick a company, pay only what you need, don%26#039;t pay 3.99 or 6 for 5 GB or 10 GB because you might not need that much. Pay $1.99 and get only what you need. Typical websites either flash or HTMl don%26#039;t need more than 20 or 30 MB.

About your website, don%26#039;t use a website builder (its my suggestion anyway), buy a template and ahve it customized. Your template can be customized for as low as $150 and template will cost u anywhere from $20 - $45 based on your liking. This way you will get a professional website with minimum $$$. Don%26#039;t get a sloppy website if you want to impress your visitors.

If you are interested let me know i can provide you more details
Reply:I would suggest website wizard...You can get a free trial and use their website builder, they are a very reliable service with support for you if you need it...They offer a couple of different hosting plans to choose from too...hope this helps and good luck with your business...:)

you can find website wizard through the website listed below...
Reply:Hello,

I would suggest that you check in the web hosting company http://netrela.net they offer website hosting with very good customer support, up-time, and the website builder that your looking for to design your new small business website. I know the support there can even help you with any designing issues as they have helped friends in the past. The website builder is all contained online within your web hosting account you simply point and click, type your text, add maps, email, photos, etc and then when you are ready to upload your website - just click the upload button and their service uploads your newly designed website. You can save off and on and upload each time you have made any new updates, everything is stored online so you don%26#039;t have to keep uploading or download anything to have your website up and running.

Hope that helps.

I highly recommend their service, it%26#039;s very reliable and only costs about $6/month. They have templates that you can set up your site including ecommerce.
Reply:I use startlogic and can recommend them for several reasons:

1) 24/7 toll free tech support - A MUST

2) Moneyback Guarantee

3) Free Domain name

4) 300 GB Space ( important if you have lots of data like photos, videos etc)

5) $5.95/ month %26amp; FREE setup

It should be published to your web host%26#039;s server and can be accessed by you simply typing in the URL to your site if they have or you have it published to Yahoo, If you are using site builder you need to use the publish option in there menubar.

Good UK Web Host?

Hiya,

Can anyone recommend a good UK based web hosting company for a small business?

I was going to go with 1%26amp;1 hosting, but their reviews online are pretty shocking. Any other suggestions? I%26#039;ve been googling web hosts for about 2 hours now and am going round in circles! I find a company, then check for reviews, and they are bad!

I don%26#039;t want to pay more than 拢80 a year, and UK based support is important. Thanks

I鈥檝e found a fantastic company called Sitesell. This is the very first time I have ever built a website, so I needed a company who could take me by the hand, step by step!

I have nothing but praise for them! They make EVERYTHING so easy! They supply all of the online training, simple (yet incredibly sophisticated tools) and excellent support.

The cost is just $299 (拢170) per year. That includes all of the above plus domain registration. They even supply the templates for designing your site! And don%26#039;t worry about html coding or other techy stuff as that%26#039;s all taken care of for you!

My site is only 9 months old. It is already very highly ranked by the major search engines and is attracting up to 1000 visitors a day! Plus it generates an income which not only covers the costs, but actually shows a healthy profit!

Can I get free web hosting anywhere to upload my website?
If you are serious about creating websites, don%26#039;t go for free webhosting as they are not reliable and you may end up losing all your work. They usually put ads on your websites and it could be annoying.

Looking for recommendation on web based project management & collaboration for small business?

My company (35 employees in home office, with 10 employees scattered in 5 remote locations) is looking for a product/service that we can used in a web based environment to track important projects and collaborate on those projects. We could host the product on our own system or use a hosted package, either option is fine.

We do NOT want something over complicated, but we do want to be able to do file sharing, have threaded conversations, track to-dos %26amp; responsibilities, set %26amp; report on milestones, track whether or not key due dates are being met.

Managing the system should be relatively easy. I am the only IT person on staff and already have a full plate.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

A) You need a webhost to get pages on the web. That%26#039;s what a webhost is, and that%26#039;s really all you need to know. I%26#039;m using Brinkster as my webhost. I learned about Brinkster through a book called : Creating Websites:The Missing Manual.

B) Your webhost will let you choose your domain name. I chose MissingMethods.com. As you can see, it was inspired by the book I read.

C)Use Dreamweaver CS3, because I was in the same position as you 2 months ago, facing the same issues, and that%26#039;s what I am using. It%26#039;s pretty good for people who don%26#039;t know what they are doing!

Let me give you a helpful link to get started:

This link gives you a review of what I just mentioned, but also provides a link to download dreamweaver free, some links to web hosts you might want to look at, links to the book, and a link to a Dreamweaver Tutorial to get you started.
PLz Help!can i create my web using dreamweaver and photoshop?im stil confused of domain and web hosting?
Yes, you can use Dreamweaver and Photoshop. Dreamweaver actually has a built-in FTP client that will allow you to upload your files to your web server.

Godaddy.com is a reliable site you can purchase your domain name from. Most sites have close to the same prices. About $10/yr. for a .com domain address.

Web hosting is where your site will reside online so that your users can view your site. You can usually have your site hosted with the same company you buy/register your domain name with or you can use two separate companies. Pricing depends on several factors including what kind of server (Windows or Linux), Disk space needed, and support.
Reply:If you%26#039;ve never created a web site before, DON%26#039;T create your own business web site. Would you, having never held a paint brush before, create your own sign to hang over the door of your brick-and-mortar store? It probably wouldn%26#039;t make much of an impression on your customers, would it? It would probably cause potential customers to NOT enter.

Same with a web site - if it%26#039;s poorly designed (and that includes computer programming that ANY business site REQUIRES) - customers who come to it will never return.

Are you prepared to write your own secure shopping cart? Get your own certificate (or buy one from your hosting company)? Interface your site with your credit card company (you do take plastic, right)?

How about the database? Are you prepared to write code to interface with that? You%26#039;re not going to keep your products on the web page in html, are you?

Web hosting? The host is the company that owns the computers (and the place they%26#039;re located) that your site code sits on. Will you pay $1,000/month for %26quot;business hosting%26quot;, when you could probably do quite well on a $15/month site?

Consider the cost of having a well-developed site an advertising expense (because that%26#039;s exactly what it is). If you do it yourself, you will (trust me - will, not may) end up paying someone to do it from scratch later down the line, after having wasted a lot of money you thought you%26#039;d saved. Don%26#039;t search for %26quot;web hosting%26quot;, search for %26quot;web design%26quot; or %26quot;web site development%26quot;. The initial consultation should be free, so see what%26#039;s available, and what would take you months, and maybe years, to learn to do right, but which will cost you a l ot less than you probably think..

Starting up a new online small business - register for vat and companies house?

Hi,

My sister and I are keen to start up a small online business (retail) and its going to be more of a hobby than a big business venture.

I%26#039;ve read up about domain names, web hosts, web builders and editors, copyrights and trademarks, etc ... the thing I am abit confused about is:

1. Do we have to register with Companies House as a requirement? Or is it not neccessery? I can%26#039;t work out if they are a legal requirement?

2. Although we dont plan to earn big bucks and will likely not make over the tax allowances, do we have to register vat and add vat to out items??

Sorry if this sounds stupid. You see lots of little online stores and myspaces selling items and their prices dont look like they add tax...

Thanks,

Charlene

You will need to register you business and pay tax on any proofits you make. It may well be worth paying for a bookkeeper for advice as they often save the money spent several times over with the advice they give.

As for VAT, if its a small business, you only need to be registered for VAT if turnover is over around 拢80,000 so I wouldn%26#039;t worry about it.

Buy a book on start-ups and it will give you all the advice you need.

My advice, don;t ignore payng tax as if you do, they%26#039;ll come after you and the fines will be impsoing and they%26#039;ll never leave you alone.

Edit. There are two types of tax. First is VAT which you need no worry about as you will be under the threshhold. The 2nd is income tax which is the tax on your profit. That is, you add up all the money you have made in the year, less any costs (materials, advertising, machinery etc etc) and what is left ois the profit you have made. You then pay tax on this the same as you paying tax on your salary.

You only register with Companies House is you form a limited company but if it is only a partnership with your sister, you will only need to contact the Inland Revenue and Nat.Ins. people. You don%26#039;t need to register for VAT unless you are over the VAT threshhold (check out Inland Revenue website for limit). However, if you are going to be buying a lot of stuff that carries VAT, it might pay you to register in order to claim the VAT back but bear in mind you will then have to charge VAT on whatever you are selling.
Reply:Marky and Lindy have given good answers! VAT needs elaborating. If you are selling to individuals, they will not be able to reclaim VAT. If you are selling to a business, they can.

Scenario 1 - Not registered for VAT

Say your product costs 拢 50.00

Add VAT 拢 8.75

Total cost 拢 58.75

Sale 拢100.00

Profit 拢 41.25

Scenario 2 - Registered VAT - Selling to individuals

Say your product costs 拢 50.00 1

Add VAT 拢 8.75 2

Total cost 拢 58.75 3

Sale 拢 85.10 4

VAT on Sale 拢 14.90 5

Profit 拢 35.10 4-1

VAT to pay 拢 6.15 5-2

VAT to pay 拢 6.15 5-2

Scenario 3 - Registered VAT - Selling to businesses

Say your product costs 拢 50.00 1

Add VAT 拢 8.75 2

Total cost 拢 58.75 3

Sale 拢100.00 4

VAT on Sale 拢 17.50 5

Profit 拢 50.00 4-1

VAT to pay 拢 8.75 5-2

Any help?

Sorry, this looked Ok until I previewed it, Answers doesn%26#039;t like the table I created!

Reply:You have to notify the tax office within three months of starting up, even if you are maintaining your full time empolyment.

You only need to notify companies house if you are opening a limited company.

You should absolutely not register for VAT until/if you go over the VAT threshold of 62,000 sale in any tax year.

Free AND banner-free web-hosting suggestions?

Hello all,

Can anyone recommend a web hosting company that

- requires no fees, besides a possible one-off registration fee

- is AD AND BANNER FREE

- allows top domain names without owning them (i.e. if you want to move to a different host, you don%26#039;t have to buy your domain name off them)?

My needs in terms of MB-space, e-mail addresses, and design gimmicks are minimal. I%26#039;d just like to launch a modest, small-business website, preferably upload the one I%26#039;ve designed.

I%26#039;ve been doing my own research, but any recommendations welcome!

Hosting plans start from something like 拢6 a month from lots of companies like dreamhost - and because you%26#039;re paying, you get support and lots of other goodies.

They have wide range of Web hosting plans which have over 99.9% uptime and with support of ASP,ASP.NET (1.1 %26amp; 2), PHP(4 %26amp;5),etc,etc.. They have near to free plans(starting from $10.99/yr). I have 16 sites hosted with them and they are rocking. Dam cheap and excellent support. I guess, they are setting new standards in web-hosting business.

If you are looking for putting up a business website, I suggest you shouldn%26#039;t go for free hosting. Its risky affair.

Happy Hosting!

Reply:If you are serious about creating websites for your business, don%26#039;t go for free webhosting as they are not reliable and you may end up losing all your work. They usually put ads on your websites and it could be annoying.

If you are planning to create websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website), go for multiple web hosting where you could handle your websites in one account.

I would suggest following webhosting , they are quite good.

Hostmonster http://www.hostmonster.com/track/ryukend...

They offer hosting of %26quot;unlimited domains%26quot; and you will get massive webspace of 200000 MB (200 GB ). They only charge $5.95/month and they offer %26quot;a free Domain Name%26quot; and installing service called %26quot;Fantastico%26quot;. By using Fantastico, you could create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer %26quot;Free Website Builder%26quot; as well.

Visit the site to check details.

What web hosting service should I use?

I%26#039;ve been looking all over at different websites, but none of them are very clear.

Here%26#039;s what I need from a web-hosting service, and I%26#039;d appreciate it greatly if someone could give me a good recommendation.

I need: something that will work with a mac (most sites don%26#039;t say specifically whether their services are compatible with macs), a monthly payment plan, a service that will include a personalized domain name (only one domain name) in the plan/price, Japanese language capable, ability to run a small business, photo video and blog capable, a decent editing program that doesn%26#039;t require advanced html/web design knowledge, and at a decent price for a poor college student. The following are not neccessary, but I would like something with personalized error pages, and a decent amount of storage space (10 gigs at least), guest book mailing list and survey ability, and decent customer service.

I liked the look of Host Monster the best, but they don%26#039;t have a monthly payment plan. Help plz?
What web hosting service should I use?
webspacesolutions.com

$10 to purchase the domain.

then hosting plans with everything you need/listed can range from $5-$10/month, cheapest. (I believe).

Reply:I%26#039;d go with dreamhost.com. You can pay monthly and I have various discount codes at http://gbroon.com/dreamhost_promotion you can use to bring the price down.

The cheapest way is to use a code for a $97 discount that makes it work out at around $22 for the first year then after that you can switch to monthly withoout paying the set up fee.

It has various software you can install via one-click install in the panel.

As to disk space it offers 500gb.

Its based in California but you can sign up from any country. Payment can be by paypal, credit card or cheque.

Website question?

My husband and I are starting a small business. We have a domain name and are looking for a good host. I know a little about web design and would like to have the flexability to insert my own backgrounds, pics, etc. We may need to be able to have an option in the future for our customers to pay invoices online via credit card, etc. We are looking for something affordable and preferabley with a free trial. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you!
Website question?
Try http://www.terapad.com - can%26#039;t get much more bargain than free! For small businesses its quite good, you have to pay $5 a month to remove the ads, but you get all the features of a business website, CMS, Web Pages, Shop, Forums, News, and easy integration with Google Analytics if you want to track your success. You can fully customise your layout as well, because Terapad allows you full access to your CSS. Worth a try .... Good luck :-)
Website question?
there are hundreds of sits out there. i would recommend www.godaddy.com. I have used them for years and am very pleased with their service.

You can also look at www1and1.com
Reply:Why don%26#039;t you check out http://www.godaddy.com web hosting. Also you can use PayPal to make your credit card sales. My wife does that and it%26#039;s cheaper than setting up a merchants accout to accept cards. PayPal accepts 4 different cards and your customers do not have to have a PayPal account to buy from you.

Once you get your site up you need to build inbound links.

Most of the directories online charge a one time fee to review your site and add it to their index. Here are three of my favorites:

http://www.avivadirectory.com/cgi-bin/af...

http://www.kahmer.com

http://www.joeant.com

The more inbound links to your site, the better you will rank

with Yahoo / Google / MSN.

Also work on your meta tags. Here is an

article on how they work: http://www.richkahmer.com/meta-tags.html

Making own WebHosting Server??

Is there a way to create my own webserver to host websites?

I know many companies offering %26#039;virtual servers%26#039;, but I am thinking if there is a way that I can buy another PC and convert it into web server???

Appreciate if anyone can give me some tips, or redirect me to information website? I have a small business, but I am fed up with hosting services as very often websites are not accessible, I can work on it because control panel link is slow etc etc.

Thanks folks!
Making own WebHosting Server??
yes, you can. Get a dedicated computer. put a web server on it like apache(http://www.apache.org). You will probably want linux(www.linux.org) because its fast, safe, and secure. Then get a domain name from a registrar set its dns to the public dns server(http://soa.granitecanyon.com/). Then set the records there to point to the ip address of your web server(get this from your ISP, you will have to pay a price for a static IP. You will also need knowledge of BIND). Then wait 24 hours to synchronize.

You should get computer people to do it for you.

You will also want a T1 connection if you expect a lot of hits.
Making own WebHosting Server??
Sure. An inexpensive way is to run a free distribution of LINUX on the old box -- it should come with Apache. The trick is to make it accessible to the Web. You will either need a static IP address (talk to your DSL or cable company) -- this is usually a substantial extra charge. Alternatively, you can use a dynamic Domain Name Service, such as TZO. Finally, you%26#039;ll need to register a domain name, and get a DNS entry corresponding to your static IP Address (or use the dDNS service to keep your DHCP address updated).

All-in-all, aside from the learning experience, you may find it more convenient to simply use a hosting service, such as 1%26amp;1, GoDaddy.com, etc.
